Can anyone tell me how to deploy this client side ActiveX component to
install silently.
We obviously secure our PC's on our site and do not want the users to see a
pop up for installation (also there then could be issues with users
installation rights).
Have at least 500+ PCs to install upon

Ric PullenThis is the answer i got that worked for us. Hope you find it usefull
I guess it depends on how you locked down IE. If they can not run activeX
controls period then there is not much you can do, if they just can't
download them then you can manually install them as I describe below.
The client print control is just a COM object. You could extract the
contents and run regsvr32 on the rsclientprint.dll. There are a couple of
issues you need to be aware of though:
1) make sure all the additional files are located in the same folder as the
rsclientprint.dll
2) If we ever update the control you will need to make sure to update the
control in your script or the control may not work correctly.

RSClientPrint ActiveX causes client PC to reboot
We have a client PC trying to run a report. When they hit the print button it
first asks them to install a SQL active X control which is RSClientPrint
Class. Once installed they hit the print button on the report which then
loads the active X print dialog - when they hit print their system reboots.
I had this person delete the control and go through the same process with
the same results; they are running Windows XP SP2 with IE6.
Any ideas? Thank You.That is exactly what I am running (XP SP2 IE6).
Are they in the local administrators group on the machine (i.e. do they have
the rights to install the activeX control?)
Do they have any printers connected to their PC? This is printing locally
not at the server.

I have one computer (WinXP, DELL laptop, 2 years old) with a HP1320 printer
connected. the RS Client print alway causes "blue screen death" when try to
print report. Printing anything else is OK.
However, the printer prints RS report OK when connected to any other
computers. So, I guess it is some sort of hardware issue with that
particular computer/printer combination. The solution is by that user a
different printer. Now the reporting print with that computer is fine and
the previous computer also happily work with other computer when printing RS
report.
So, you may try to update the printer's driver first, and then try to use a
different computer.
Just an experience using RS2000 printing. RS2000 reporitn rendering/printing
horribly bad.

printing a matrix report. All other report types print Ok.|||I am having same problem any idea to solve this issue

I found a solution for your problem. You probably installed the hotfix
925902 recently. Its a known issue for Microsoft. Some printers only (until
now : Ricoh LAN Fax Driver, Gestetner P7026n PCL, Ricoh Laser AP2600N PCL,
HP LaserJet 9050, HP LaserJet 4200, HP 4050 PCL6, HP LaserJet 4345 PCL 6 and
Canon Pixma MP170) are impacted.
This problem occurs when a printer driver makes a call that has invalid
parameters to the Win32K.sys component.
The hotfix KB935843 solved the problem on my computer.

rsactivate error - trying to install on 2003 with Sharepoint servi
I am trying to install SQL Reporting Services on a Windows Server 2003 box
that is running Sharepoint Services 2.0.
When you run the install you are warned that you will need to manually
initialize SQL Reporting because of Sharepoint and are referred to the
documentation. In the rssetup.chm there is an article entitled
"Troubleshooting a Side-by-Side Installation of Reporting Services and
Windows SharePoint Services". I followed these instructions, but when I get
to the last step where you run rsactivate, I get an error:
Failure starting the web service:
The service is already activated.
I did have reporting installed on this server once before but it was
uninstalled. I tried uninstalling reporting services when I got this error,
then tried again but I get the same result. I've been deleting the virtual
directories, the program files folder, and the databases before trying again.
I also noticed that two com + packages are left behind. If you don't remove
them the next installation adds two more. I removed all of them and tried
again but still the same result. I don't possess any knowledge of web
services so I'm not sure where to look next.
Can anyone help please?

>|||I don't think the COM+ changes had anything to do with this. At some point,
you ran or installed something that reset the password on your ASPNet
account. Installing a version of the .Net framework will do this. So will
running aspnet_regiis. When the password is reset (reset = changed without
supplying the original one) on an account, the decryption keys associated
with that account are lost. There is probably an event in your windows
event log that indicates this happened.

directories, the program files folder, and the databases before trying again.

I have just installed RS (Standard Edition on Win2K. SQL instance on same
server). At the end of install, I got a dialog that said: Setup could not
initialize the report server. You must manually initialize the report
server before using using it for the first time..
I ran:
rsconfig -c -s sqlservername -d ReportServer -a SQL -u username -p
password
It returned:
The command completed successfully
I then ran:
rsactivate -c"C:\Program Files\.\RSReportServer.config" -t
It returns:
Failure starting the web service:
System.Exception: Unexpected database error (-2147159548) .

RS2005 Standard install error..
I am installing SQL 2005 and RS 2005 on a new W2k3 server. I have tried to
install to a default instance and to a named instance and continue to get the
following error when I try to retrieve the reports page or connect to the
reporting services thru Microsoft SQL server Management Studio.

provided us on this issue, but your "removing the entry for
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>" is the best information on this error
message. I don't have SSL and the Configuration Tool doesn't fix this problem
when you move the virtual directories to another website. I have wasted
entirely too many hours on this and have actually reloaded our 2003 server
twice. Simply remove the <ReportServerVirtualDirectory> tag and all is well.

RS2005 cant'connect to server
Hi. Like some others here, I'm struggling to get a production install of
RS2005 (SP2). RS is installed on a dedicated W2K3 (SP2) server. The
database is on a separate SQL 2005 (SP2) server. With the help of some posts
here I finally am able to browse to Report Manager and also deploy reports
from VS2005, but only when local to the report server. On my own
workstation, I get "cannot display the page" when I try to browse to Report
Manager , and "connection could not be made to the report server" when I try
to deploy reports. I checked local intranet sites in IE, and the whole
segment is allowed (set in GP) so that isn't th problem. Do you have any
ideas why I can't connect to RS from a workstation on my network? Thanks.Hi,

setup correctly. I think the issue here is that you have not configured
roles properly. By default if you are a member of the local administrators
group then you are in the role that allows you to deploy. RS has its own
roles, totally separate from database security. Add your user for your
workstation to the local administrator group on the server. Then give it all
a try.
Also, try fully qualify your server (I assume when local you just used
localhost). For instance try
http://servername.whatever.com/reports
My guess is this is an issue with RS roles.

setup correctly. I think the issue here is that you have not configured
roles properly. By default if you are a member of the local administrators
group then you are in the role that allows you to deploy. RS has its own
roles, totally separate from database security. Add your user for your
workstation to the local administrator group on the server. Then give it all
a try.
Also, try fully qualify your server (I assume when local you just used
localhost). For instance try
http://servername.whatever.com/reports
My guess is this is an issue with RS roles.

(DC) and SQL Server 2000 SP4 environment. There is no option to ignore the
Error 1603 message , the only option is to cancel and rollback the
installation.
There is a parsing error is in the "LoadRSCatalog" Function- (see end of log)

RS2000 which OS?
Hello,
Can I install reporting services in a XP Pro, or windows 2000. We have SQL Server 2000 installed on XP Pro, I was trying to install RS2000 and I got a message it sais OS should be a server. Does that mean RS2000 can only be installed on a server? Can I install RS2000 on a windows 2000 machine?

Your understanding is correct. You can't install linensed reporting services on windows XP prof and you can install in on Win 2000.

RS2000 Install error
When trying to install RS2000 I'm getting a very generic "Error!" message
just as it begins trying to install the "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting
Services Setup Support Files".
It makes it through the setup of WinInstall and .NET Framework1.1 just fine
but as soon as it get to trying to install the RS Setup Support Files it just
stops with the generic "Error!" message and the only option is to cancel.
I've setup RS2000 on many WinXP, Win2000 Server, and Win2003 Servers with NO
problem, but I've been beating my head aginst this one for over a week.
The server is Win2K SP4, local install of SQL Server 2K SP3a. .NET v1.1 is
installed and ASP.NET has been installed in IIS and DTC is running. Being
completely confused I installed VS.NET2003 on the server (as they use a lot
of the same stuff). VS.NET 2003 installed no problem, but after RS2000 still
just gives me the generic "Error!" message.
There are no errors being recorded in the event viewer, SQL logs, or the log
that should be created during RS install (in the RS Bootstrapper dir) since
it isn't even created since it fails before we actually get to the RS install
(just gets to the pre-install stuff).
I'm really out of ideas here! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!One additional detail which may (or may not) be helpful.

The server I'm trying to install on is a production server dedicated to SQL
Server. The only other thing installed is Mcafee enterprise virus protection
(I disable and stop all Macafee related services before each install attempt).
I've copied the SQL Reporting Services Standard install locally from 2
different DVDs (wondering of the the first was corrupt). Then I tried SQL
Reporting Services Developer version because, hey at this point all try
anything ;-).
If I don't hear anymore suggestions, I guess the next thing is to try
rebuilding the server though as its a production machine I'm not too crazy
about this idea.

I have experienced this issue twice now, and not found the answer. Both
times on a Win2K server (don't know whether that has anything to do with it).
The Australian MS Support guys tried to help me the first time I experienced
it at a customer site. Because we ran out of time we ended up rebuilding the
machine and RS installed no problem thereafter. At the time I put the issue
down to a one off issue. During the time we were trying to find the problem I
posted here under "Cannot install Setup Support Files" but didn't hear
anything back.
I was on another client site a couple of weeks ago and experienced the same
issue again. This time I didn't have the luxury of being able to rebuild the
machine. We had to abort the install on that machine.
The common thread between the two cases has been:
1. Both were installs of RS Standard - using different disks from different
sources
2. Both were on Win2K Server SP4
3. When looking at the Setup Bootstrap log files both systems fell over when
trying to perform the "PerformDetections" function. From what I can gather
this is a function that produces the output we're supposed to see on the next
screen (that we can't get to on account of the error) of the setup wizard,
where you are told/warned either "IIS is not installed", "VS.NET 2003 is not
installed" etc.etc. It seems there is a part/s of the cache that cannot be
read...
Both of the clients I was working for were not requiring production installs
of RS so there were (thankfully) no real repercussions for the failed
installs. My company is doing a lot of RS work so I really want to find out
what this issue is, though, so that when (if) I come accross it again I can
get past the error.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist in finding an
answer to this issue.

completely confused I installed VS.NET2003 on the server (as they use a lot
of the same stuff). VS.NET 2003 installed no problem, but after RS2000 still
just gives me the generic "Error!" message.
There are no errors being recorded in the event viewer, SQL logs, or the log
that should be created during RS install (in the RS Bootstrapper dir) since
it isn't even created since it fails before we actually get to the RS install
(just gets to the pre-install stuff).
I'm really out of ideas here! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!One additional detail which may (or may not) be helpful.

The server I'm trying to install on is a production server dedicated to SQL
Server. The only other thing installed is Mcafee enterprise virus protection
(I disable and stop all Macafee related services before each install attempt).
I've copied the SQL Reporting Services Standard install locally from 2
different DVDs (wondering of the the first was corrupt). Then I tried SQL
Reporting Services Developer version because, hey at this point all try
anything ;-).
If I don't hear anymore suggestions, I guess the next thing is to try
rebuilding the server though as its a production machine I'm not too crazy
about this idea.

I have experienced this issue twice now, and not found the answer. Both
times on a Win2K server (don't know whether that has anything to do with it).
The Australian MS Support guys tried to help me the first time I experienced
it at a customer site. Because we ran out of time we ended up rebuilding the
machine and RS installed no problem thereafter. At the time I put the issue
down to a one off issue. During the time we were trying to find the problem I
posted here under "Cannot install Setup Support Files" but didn't hear
anything back.
I was on another client site a couple of weeks ago and experienced the same
issue again. This time I didn't have the luxury of being able to rebuild the
machine. We had to abort the install on that machine.
The common thread between the two cases has been:
1. Both were installs of RS Standard - using different disks from different
sources
2. Both were on Win2K Server SP4
3. When looking at the Setup Bootstrap log files both systems fell over when
trying to perform the "PerformDetections" function. From what I can gather
this is a function that produces the output we're supposed to see on the next
screen (that we can't get to on account of the error) of the setup wizard,
where you are told/warned either "IIS is not installed", "VS.NET 2003 is not
installed" etc.etc. It seems there is a part/s of the cache that cannot be
read...
Both of the clients I was working for were not requiring production installs
of RS so there were (thankfully) no real repercussions for the failed
installs. My company is doing a lot of RS work so I really want to find out
what this issue is, though, so that when (if) I come accross it again I can
get past the error.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist in finding an
answer to this issue.

Enteprise edition. Tried practically everything but just does not seem to
work. Guess will have to rebuild the server.
